Coopesantos RL Awaits Approval for Two Projects in Costa Rica

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Cooperativa de Electrificación Rural de Los Santos (Coopesantos RL) (San Joaquin, Costa Rica) expects to secure financing by the end of August 2009 to build a 12-megawatt (MW) windfarm and a 30-MW hydroelectric power station in Costa Rica.

Coopesantos, which has been active in the country since the 1970s, is currently under negotiations to obtain financing to build La Ventolera windfarm in the Guarco de Cartago area with a total investment of about $30 million. The project, whose preliminary technical design is almost complete, is expected to be developed under a turnkey contract. Bidding is expected to begin in the coming months after capital financing is obtained, company officials told Industrial Info. La Ventolera will consist of 12 to 16 wind turbines, each rated between 750 kilowatts (kW) and 950 kW. Construction is scheduled to last 12 months, while mechanical construction kickoff is scheduled for September 2010.

At the same time, although less far along in the preliminary design phase, Coopesantos is developing a 30-MW hydro project in San Joaquin. This hydroelectric power station, whose total investment cost will be around $90 million, will be equipped with four hydraulic turbines to be installed along three powerhouses in a cascade design. Three of the turbines will have capacities of between 8 MW and 9 MW, while a smaller turbine has been designed for one of the powerhouses. As for San Joaquin, certain geology studies are still missing in order to decide the exact powerhouse locations. In addition, more technical details will depend on the offers when bidding opens. Plans also include selecting a firm under a turnkey contract.
