Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). DCM Shriram Consolidated, Limited (DSCL) (New Delhi, India) plans to spend $70 million on expanding the production capacity of a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) unit and a caustic soda unit, both at their site in Bharuch, India. The project is expected to begin during the first quarter of 2005, with a tentative completion date during the second quarter of 2006. These two projects are being planned concurrently, with the debottlenecking of a sugar mill and a production increase at an existing cement plant, both located in India, as well.
The polyvinyl chloride unit has a current production capacity of 40,000 metric tons a year that will be augmented by 20,000 metric tons a year, by installing new equipment and upgrading, or modifying, some existing process equipment. The caustic soda unit will be expanded from 45,000 metric tons a year to 70,500 metric tons a year by installing Asahi Chemicals' membrane technology, and modifying existing process and supporting equipment.
DCM Shriram's history dates all the way back to 1889 with the foundation of The Delhi Cloth & General Mills Company, Limited. In 1932, the company expanded into sugar mills, followed by confectionaries in 1938. DCM Chemical Works was added in 1941 and the company progressively expanded into distilleries, textiles, silk, rayons, vinyl resins, fertilizers, and the last addition, cement production in 1987.
It wasn't until 1990 that DCM Shriram Consolidated, Limited was established as an official division of DCM Limited, which controls one third of the business and is comprised of fertilizers, chlor alkalis, water treatment, PVC resins, and compounds, cement, textiles, seeds, and sugar.
All of DSCL's product lines are ISO 9000, 14000 certified and OHSAS 18001:1999 system of Occupational Health and Safety Certifications. DSCL is committed to "socially responsible business activity" and has made consistent contributions to the country of India regarding the environment, health care, family planning, education, cultural heritage and rural development. Because of these contributions they have also received a SA 8000:2001 certification by RINA (Registro Italiano Navale), which places them in an elite class of Indian companies to receive this recognition.
