Demand in Asia's Construction Sector Fuels Metallurgical Coke Growth

Reports related to this article:

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Growing demand for steel and iron, emerging economies and rapid industrialization have fueled the development of metallurgical coke plants worldwide, aided by increased government investment in steel and iron for construction and infrastructure. Other factors include favorable investment climates, advances in coke-making technology, and stronger global trade and supply chains.

Metallurgical coke, which is produced by heating prepared coal in an oxygen-free atmosphere, plays a crucial role in iron and steel production. As a high-quality fuel and reducing agent, metallurgical coke is nearly pure carbon with a high calorific value. More than 90% of metallurgical coke is used primarily in blast furnace operations, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Industrial Info is tracking more than US$19 billion worth of active and planned capital-spending on 207 metallurgical coke projects worldwide. Asia is driving 94% of this investment, with China and India accounting for about US$14 billion and US$2 billion, respectively. The Asia-Pacific region has been the largest consumer of metallurgical coke over the past few years.

About 29% of the spending is attributed to grassroot projects, 25% on unit additions and 22% on plant expansions. China's Gansu Jinruikang Coal Chemical Company Limited is one of the leading investors, thanks in part to the phased expansion of its metallurgical coke plant in Yumen, Gansu, which will allow the facility to produce up to 4 million metric tons per year of metallurgical coke.

Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Metals & Minerals Project and Plant databases can read detailed reports on Phase I and Phase II of the project, and read a detailed plant profile.

About 49% of the total global spending is attributed to projects under construction, while 35% is attributed to projects being planned and 16% to projects in the engineering phase. Most of the projects are slated to be completed between April 2024 and April 2028.
