Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Burns & McDonnell (Fort Worth, Texas) has been selected to perform an energy analysis and conceptual and detailed design for an $81 million central utility plant planned for Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, Texas.
The utility plant will support a new 17-story acute-care hospital. Energy-efficient measures currently being evaluated include heat-pump chillers, thermal-energy storage and chilled-water plant optimization, which will help optimize energy use and provide reliable and efficient utilities to the campus. The new plant will provide 12,000 tons of cooling capacity, 110,000 pounds per hour of steam, and 20 megawatts of emergency power generation to provide heating, cooling and electricity for the new hospital and medical office buildings. A construction management firm is anticipated to be selected by the late summer, and construction is anticipated to start by the summer of 2011. Overall completion for the new central utility plant is expected by the fall of 2012.
The Parkland Health & Hospital System was founded in 1872 and includes the Parkland Memorial Hospital, which was founded more than 55 years ago. The new central utility plant is part of a $1.27 billion expansion of the Parkland Memorial Hospital campus. The total budget includes $747 million from a bond program approved by Dallas County voters.
