Dominican Republic to Build Two 600-Megawatt Coal-Fired Power Plants

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Two private firms will invest $1.6 billion to build two coal-fired power plants in the Dominican Republic. One will be located in Manzanillo Bay of Pepillo Salcedo on the Northwest Coast, and the other will be built in Azua, about 35 kilometers away from Santo Domingo in San Cristobal Province.

The Pepillo Salcedo plant will have two 330-megawatt Dongfang steam turbines. Construction is expected to start in June 2008. The first unit could be complete by 2011, with the second to follow a few months later. The owner of the plant is China's Sichuan Machinery and Equipment Import & Export, which signed a contract with Compania Dominicana de Empresas Electricas Estatales, which will buy 75% of the energy generated.

The Azua facility will be equipped with two steam turbines and coal pulverized boilers. Central Generadora Azua, a consortium formed mainly by Emirates Power DR, Vicinic Group and Seabord, owns the plant, which will supply half of the energy generated to the spot market.
