Researched by Industrial Info Resources( Sugar Land, Texas)--Dirt is being moved at the 800-megawatt Cliffside Power Station (Cliffside, North Carolina) in Rutherford County for construction to start next month to add the coal-fired Unit 6 to the plant.
Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE: DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) had proposed to the North Carolina Utilities Commission back in 2005 to construct two additional 800 MW units at the plant, but in 2007, the commission only authorized half of Duke's request because of opposition from environmentalists about the units' emissions.
Duke Energy's plan is to shut down the four small units in 2012 after the new unit becomes operational.
Unit 6 will include a Toshiba steam turbine generator and an Alstom supercritical pulverized boiler equipped with low nitrogen oxide (NOx) burners, a selective catalytic reduction unit to reduce NOx, and a flue gas desulfurization scrubber to reduce sulfur dioxide.
The Shaw Group Incorporated (NYSE: SGR) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) is providing engineering and construction services.
