EPC Contractor Chosen for 600-Megawatt Unit Addition at Interstate Power's Iowa Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Interstate Power and Light Company, a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin), has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract to Black & Veatch Construction (Overland Parks, Kansas) to build the 600-megawatt Unit 4 addition at the Sutherland Power Station in Marshalltown, Iowa, in Marshall County.

The $1.25 billion facility will be built next to the existing station, which consists of Units 1, 2 and 3. Unit 4 will be a baseload, supercritical, pulverized coal-fired plant that will burn agricultural-related products as part of a requirement to Interstate Power from the utility board.

Part of the construction also involved the installation of emissions-reduction equipment, such as a selective catalytic reduction system to reduce nitrogen dioxide (NOx), a flue gas desulfurization scrubber to reduce sulfur dioxide, low NOx burners and a baghouse to reduce particulate matter.

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2009 and be complete in 2014.

Interstate Power is the majority owner of the plant with 54%. Other owners include the Central Iowa Power Cooperative (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), the Corn Belt Power Cooperative (Humboldt, Iowa) and North Iowa Municipal Electric (Humboldt).
