Expansion Under Way at Sorrento's Idaho Cheese-Processing Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sorrento Lactalis Incorporated (Buffalo, New York), a subsidiary of French company Groupe Lactalis (Laval, France), has begun expanding the company's whey-drying operations in Nampa, Idaho. In May, state and local officials gathered at the plant on Franklin Road for the official groundbreaking. The company is adding a new whey-dryer to increase production capacity and expects to generate 50 new jobs when the project is completed in spring 2010.

Total investment for the project is estimated to be $50 million and includes a 60,000-square-foot building addition and a new whey-evaporation tower with storage silos. The expansion is expected to increase cheese production from 400,000 pounds per year to 600,000 pounds per year when completed next year. Design-build firm Stahlman Group (Concord, New Hampshire) was retained by Sorrento for engineering and construction management services.
