Family Dollar Awards Contract for $60 Million Distribution Center Planned in New York

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated Houston, Texas). Family Dollar Stores Incorporated (NYSE:FDO) (Charlotte, North Carolina), the nation's #2 dollar store (behind Dollar General), has awarded The Conlan Company (Marietta, Georgia) the general construction contract to build its $60 million regional distribution center in Rome, New York.

This facility will be the company's ninth distribution center. Site preparation for the 907,000 square foot distribution center, located in the Griffiss Business & Technology Park in Oneida County, is expected to begin in April of 2005, with overall completion slated for April 2006. The new distribution center will service the northeast region for department store and general merchandise distribution.

Earlier this year, Family Dollar Stores had chosen Athens, Pennsylvania, in the Valley Business Park to build a new distribution center, but had cancelled plans and later chose Rome, New York, instead. The company had been weighing both the sites in New York and in Pennsylvania for the past few months, but chose Rome, New York based on the available work force, the infrastructure, and financial incentives.

Family Dollar Stores Incorporated, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, was founded in 1959. The company targets women shopping for families making around $25,000 a year. The company operates 5,600 stores in 44 states and the District of Columbia. Food, health and beauty aids, housewares, and toys account for 75% of the stores' sales. Family Dollar emphasizes neighborhood stores near its low- and middle-income customers in rural and urban areas. Most merchandise is less than $10 dollars. As of 2004, the company consisted of 39,000 employees, and had sales of $5.2 million.
