Food and Beverage Industry Review Reveals $26.7 Billion in Industrial Projects Reported in 2009

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In 2009, capital expenditures reported at food and beverage facilities in North America, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, totaled $26.7 billion. Over the course of the year, Industrial Info released 1,610 new and updated project reports, detailing capital and maintenance expenditures, each with a minimum total investment value of $1 million. Project coverage included grassroot construction, rebuilds, modernizations, upgrades, modifications, additions, and major maintenance shutdowns.

Projects listed as capital, or non-maintenance related, numbered 1,264 and had a combined total investment value of $26.3 billion; while projects expensed as maintenance numbered 346 and carried a value of $387 million.

Economic conditions led to the cancellation of more than $2.1 billion in new construction and expansion projects. In some instances, companies found it difficult to overcome opposition to build in local communities. Among those were plans by McCain Foods Limited (Florenceville, New Brunswick) to build a $150 million potato processing plant in Washington State and Nestle S.A.'s (OTC:NSRGY) (Vevey, Switzerland) withdrawal of a $60 million proposed bottled water plant in Washington.

Overall expenditures and project counts by country are as follows: United States, $24.7 billion and 1,457 projects; Canada, $2.01 billion and 152 projects; and Mexico, $50 million and 1 project.

Grassroot project activity accounted for $13.1 billion from 404 projects, or 48.7% of overall spending for the period.

Notable projects reported on in 2009 included Imperial Sugar's $220 million rebuild of a sugar packaging plant in Georgia; Malt-o-Meal $104 million cereal plant in North Carolina; and General Mills mega-distribution center in Social Circle, Georgia.
