The following is an advisory by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Inc, Houston, Texas). Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) has started construction on a $375 million expansion of a truck assembly plant in Norfolk, Virginia. Ford, as the construction manager, selected Gala & Associates as the designer and engineer for the project. M&M Design and Tri-Tech, LLC were awarded contracts to provide civil engineering and mechanical services, respectively.
Site preparation started at the beginning of the year and Graycor Industrial Constructors began construction on the 350,000 square foot building in April. Equipment should be in place by June of 2002 to begin manufacturing of the prototype 2003 model Ford F-150 pick-up truck.
The Norfolk plant opened in 1925 and last year produced approximately 240,000 F-Series pickup trucks and presently employs over 2,300 people. Ford is the world's largest producer of trucks and the second largest producer of cars and trucks combined.
