Fort Churchill Generating Station Sets New Safety Record

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Fort Churchill Generating Station set a new safety record at the end of March with 27 years of safe plant operations without a lost time accident. The 226-megawatt (MW) power plant is in Wabuska, Nevada and has two gas-fired Babcock and Wilcox boilers with General Electric generator units. The first went into service in 1968 and the second in 1971. The units can also both run on fuel oil.

This is not the first safety record set by Fort Churchill Generating Station. In 2010, the plant got a national safety award from the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) for operating more than 23 years without a lost time accident. An association of U.S. shareholder-owned electric companies, EEI's members generate power for around 220 million Americans, operate in 49 states and the District of Columbia, and directly employ more than 500,000 workers.

The Fort Churchill Station is owned by NV Energy Incorporated (Reno, Nevada), the holding company for energy subsidiaries Nevada Power Company and Sierra Pacific Power Company. NV Energy was purchased last year by MidAmerican Energy Company (Des Moines, Iowa), a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKA) (Omaha, Nebraska).

Paul Caudill, President of NV Energy said, "This 27-year safety record is remarkable, especially considering that our teams work around the clock to provide reliable power to our customers. The plant team has obviously taken safety to heart, demonstrating attention to detail and helping each other avoid unsafe conditions or acts. Our top operational priority is safety, and we have established that our first priority is for our employees to return home to their families safely. We can all learn from the Fort Churchill team. I could not be prouder to work with them for NV Energy."

Plant Director Wade Barcellos said, "Our safety culture has been contagious at Fort Churchill. Our safety success can be traced to the individual commitment of our employees and company leaders who legitimately make safety such a priority."
