Gary Works Blast Furnace $75 Million Rebuild Nears Completion

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). United States Steel Corporation (NYSE:X) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is nearing completion of a major blast furnace rebuild at the company’s Gary Steel Works in Gary, Indiana. In early May of 2005, U.S. Steel announced that the $75 million rebuild would start in late May 2005 rather than in early August 2005, as had been previously announced. This project was initially reported by Industrialinfo.com in 2002 as part of its North American Plant Database.

The Gary Works #13 blast furnace rebuild was delayed due to an industrial accident in September, but work has resumed and it is expected that the unit will be back online this December. Carriers, which were transporting a large fabricated furnace section in preparation for placement at the location failed, causing damage not only to the carriers, but damage to a furnace section. Replacement equipment had to be secured and the furnace shell had to be inspected to establish the extent of any damage and needed repairs, causing a setback in completion. The new furnace has been renamed #14 and should be at full production in January 2006, with an expected production capacity of 9,200 tons per day for a total of 4 million tons annually over the next 20 years.

Gary Steel Works is located on approximately 3,000 acres on the South Shore of Lake Michigan. It includes both steelmaking and finishing facilities. Gary Works is one of five steelmaking facilities U.S. Steel operates in the United States. United States Steel was founded in 1901. Many a company can trace its beginnings to meager or humble origins, but U.S. Steel started with a lineage that included some of America's most well known businessmen including Andrew Carnegie, Elbert H. Gary, J.P. Morgan, and Charles Schwab. Elbert H. Gary was the principal architect and became U. S. Steel's first chairman.
