Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--Exasperated by an inordinate delay in the commercial operation of its gas-fired power units, Gurgaon-based Sravanthi Energy Limited (SEPL) (Gurgaon, Haryana) has now shifted its focus toward the renewable energy sector. The company has chalked up a tight construction schedule to achieve commissioning of its first 98.7-megawatt (MW) windfarm in Madhya Pradesh by June 2013. The company has engaged India's leading wind turbine maker, Suzlon Energy Limited (BSE:532667) (Pune Maharashtra), to develop the project.
Sravanthi Energy's 450-MW gas-fired power plant, located in the central India state of Uttarakhand, cannot commence power generation almost a year after its completion due to the delay in the commencement of the gas supply. The first two 75-MW gas turbine-generator units of the project, which were originally slated to begin operations in June 2011, have been idled due to the delay in the completion of the associated 182-kilometer Karanpur-Moradabad-Kashipur-Rudrapur gas pipeline.
According to the terms of the contract, Suzlon will develop 47 wind turbine units, each with a 2.1-MW capacity, at Ratlam Plant. According Sravanthi Energy sources, Suzlon kicked off the construction for this project in February 2012. The company has planned to set up another 80-MW windfarm at the same site.
The company previously had firmed up an ambitious plan to develop 930 megawatts (MW) of gas-fired power projects by the end of 2014. Apart from its Uttarakhand project, the company has proposed to develop another 480 MW of gas-fired capacity in Andhra Pradesh.
SEPL is a special-purpose vehicle promoted by the Sravanthi Group for the development of merchant power plants in India. Sravanthi Group is an integrated power sector developer and operator. SEPL has set a target to increase its generation portfolio to 5,000 MW by 2015, through the development of thermal, gas, hydro and wind energy-based projects. The group also has an independent entity for undertaking engineering, procurement and construction activities for third-party power projects.
