General Contractor Selected for $50 Million Environmental Upgrade at AES’ New York Plant

AES Westover, LLC (Johnson City, New York), a subsidiary of AES Corporation (Arlington, Virginia), has chosen Buffalo, New York-based Nicholson & Hall Corporation to provide construction services for a $50 million environmental upgrade at the 119-megawatt (MW) Westover Power Station (Johnson City, New York).

The bituminous coal-fired facility is located in Broome County, and consists of two Siemens Westinghouse turbine/generator sets, one Foster Wheeler opposed-fired boiler and one Alstom Combustion Engineering tangential-fired dry bottom boiler. The units became operational in 1943 and 1951.

The multi-pollutant control project on the 75 MW Unit #8 will include the installation of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx), a dry flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions (SO2), and a baghouse to reduce particulate matter.

Babcock Power Environmental, Incorporated (Worcester, Massachusetts) is providing engineering services for the project. Site preparation has already started, with construction beginning this summer. Completion of the project is expected in the fourth quarter of 2008.

AES has just completed the same environmental upgrade on its 105 MW Unit #4 at the Greenidge Power Station (Dresden, New York) in November of 2006.
