Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Offsetting the looming specter of the winter snow, the Genzyme Corporation (Nasdaq:GENZ)(Cambridge, Massachusetts) is getting ready to go green at its Framingham, Massachusetts research campus. Project contractor Bovis Lend Lease has started construction of an environmentally friendly or "green" 177,000 square-foot research building that will expand the companys already formidable presence in Massachusetts. (See Industrialinfo.coms New England Region Online Plant Directory)
This project, which was first reported in January 2005 in the Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database, is part of the Labs21 program, an EPA sponsored voluntary effort dedicated to improving the environmental performance of U.S. laboratories. The typical laboratory uses far more energy and water per square foot than a typical office building due to intensive ventilation requirements and other health and safety concerns.
The Genzyme building's "green" features will include a sophisticated heating and cooling system, high-efficiency fume hoods for researchers, low-flow water fixtures and landscaping designed for maximum water conservation. The extensive use of glass will reduce electricity needs by allowing a large amount of natural light inside.
Joining a nationwide trend (see Applied Biosystems Completes $80 Million Phase I of New Biotech Campus in California), Genzyme is hoping to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification when the building is complete in 2007. The LEED system was created to define exactly what a "green" building is by providing a common standard of measurement.
The project also includes a separate central utilities building that will provide utility steam and chilled water to the new building, as well as the three existing Genzyme buildings in Framingham. In addition to being used for heating and cooling, these utilities are also used in the production process.
