Gerdau Acominas to Begin Flat Steel Production in Brazil

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Gerdau Acominas S.A. (Ouro Branco, Brazil), a subsidiary from the Brazilian steel company Gerdau S.A. (NYSE:GNA) (Porto Alegre, Brazil), is moving forward with a project to construct a heavy plate mill in the Presidente Arthur Bernardes steel facility in Ouro Branco, in the Minas Gerais state of southern Brazil.

The steel mill is the company's largest integrated steel unit in the world. Currently, it has the capacity to produce 4.5 million tons of long steel per year. The $1 billion project entails the addition of a 1 million-ton-per-year heavy plate mill. Flat steel production will supply mainly the local market, especially the petrochemical, naval and construction industries.

Company expects to select an engineering firm for detailed engineering works and a constructor in the first quarter of 2010. Construction is planned to start by the end of 2010 and last 24 months, with project completion set for end of 2012.

The project is the beginning of Gerdau's flat steel production in Brazil. Currently, the steel group only produces flat products in U.S. facilities.
