Written by Jay Brunson, Global Vice President of Alternative Fuels for Industrial Info (Sugar Land, Texas)--A first-of-its-kind joint venture project to turn whiskey into power will soon break ground in Scotland. Helius CoREe Limited (Rothes, Scotland), a joint venture between The Combination of Rothes Distillers Limited (CoRD) and Helius Energy plc (London, England), will construct a 7.2-megawatt (MW) combined heat and power plant that will utilize wood chips and waste from the 50-plus distillers in the Speyside area of Scotland, which produces more than half of Scotland's whiskey.
The estimated $99.84 million plant will generate 7.2 MW of electricity, enough to provide for 9,000 homes and produce animal feed. The by-products from distilling whiskey, called draff and pot ale, which is residue from copper stills, along with wood chips, will be used to fire the plant, which will be in Aberlour.
The biomass-fueled boiler will run a 7.2-MW steam turbine that will produce electricity and steam for the distillery, and additional power will reach the U.K.'s International power grid. The project also will reduce CoRD's current dependence on fossil fuels.
Construction is expected to begin within the next couple of months, and the project is expected to become fully operational by early 2013.
