Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Energy construction services company Aecon Group Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario) is racking up more contracts in 2023 for work on some of North America's most closely watched nuclear power projects, with additional work set for natural gas and renewable-based developments. Recent growth has been driven largely by refurbishment-related work in Ontario and the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking more than US$16.5 billion worth of active projects involving Aecon's services, more than US$13.5 billion of which is attributed to projects overseen by Ontario's Ministry of Energy.

Shoreline Power Group, a joint venture among Aecon, SNC-Lavalin Group Incorporated (Montreal, Quebec) and United Engineers & Constructors Incorporated (Kincardine, Ontario), in which Aecon is the lead partner, has been awarded a C$1.3 billion (US$960 million) fuel channel and feeder replacement (FCFR) contract by Bruce Power for the modernizations of units 4, 5, 7 and 8 at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station in Tiverton, Ontario. Planning is expected to begin in the second quarter, with construction set to kick off in the first quarter of 2025, according to Aecon.

Shoreline is now contracted to execute FCFR work on all six of Bruce Power's active units, which is expected to extend the life of the site to 2064. The joint venture and Bruce Power have been making progress on the refurbishment of Unit 6, which started in 2020, and started work on the modernization of Unit 3 earlier this year. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Unit 6 and Unit 3 projects.
Aecon reported a C$6 billion (US$4.6 billion) project backlog at the end of the first quarter, with new contract awards totaling C$812 million (US$599 million) booked during the quarter. Nuclear contracts accounted for C$5.9 billion (US$4.3 billion) and C$795 million (US$587 million), respectively. (The aforementioned contract for the Bruce Power Station will be added to Aecon's second-quarter backlog totals.)
In addition to its work in the nuclear sector, Aecon expects to finish construction in the coming months on the US$110 million Emerson Creek Compressor Station near Edson, Alberta, for TC Energy (NYSE:TRP) (Calgary, Alberta), formerly TransCanada. The station will allow TC Energy to transport up to 150 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas on the Grand Prairie 4 segment of its Nova Gas Transmission Line. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's project report.
Aecon also recently started work on two major components of Enbridge Incorporated's (NYSE:ENB) (Calgary) Dawn Corunna Project in the St. Clair Township area of Ontario, which sits on the border with Michigan. The project includes the construction of a 20-mile, US$77 million pipeline between Mooretown and the Township of Dawn-Euphemia, running from the Corunna Compressor Station to the Dawn Operations Centre, and US$22 million in replacements and additions at the Corunna Compressor Station.
The bulk of the Dawn Corunna Project involves replacing older natural gas storage and transmission assets in the St. Clair Township area, according to Enbridge. Overhauls at the Corunna Compressor Station include the decommissioning and replacement of seven of its 11 natural gas compressors, which are approaching the end of their lifecycles. Enbridge and Aecon expect this will add 50 million standard cubic feet per day of capacity at the station. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the pipeline and Corunna Compressor Station work.
On the renewables side, Aecon expects to begin construction early next year on Oneida Energy Storage LP's US$450 million battery energy-storage system (BESS) in Jarvis, Ontario. The 250-MW, 1,000-megawatt-hour facility will be located on a right-of-way managed by Hydro One (Toronto), and it will use Tesla Incorporated's (NASDAQ:TSLA) (Austin, Texas) "Megapack" large-scale energy-storage model. Subscribers can read more in Industrial Info's project report.
"Aecon is pleased to report continued progress towards its target to achieve a 30% reduction in direct CO2 emissions by 2030, with a 14% direct reduction already achieved to-date by the end of 2022 on an intensity basis," said Jean-Louis Servranckx, the chief executive officer of Aecon, in a recent quarterly earnings-related conference call.
