Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Department of Energy has granted regulatory clearance to Holtec International (Jupiter, Florida) to transfer small modular reactor (SMR) technology to select private firms in India. This approval enables Holtec to engage in nuclear design and manufacturing activities within India, paving the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy.
The clearance applies to Holtec's regional subsidiary Holtec Asia (Pune), alongside Tata Consulting Engineers Limited (Mumbai, India) and Larsen & Toubro Limited (Mumbai). However, Indian government-owned entities remain excluded due to pending non-proliferation assurances from the Indian government.
Holtec's SMR technology is set to transform India's nuclear power landscape by introducing cost-efficient, modular, and scalable reactors. Unlike conventional nuclear plants, SMRs require less land, operate at lower costs, and incorporate passive safety mechanisms, reducing risks and facilitating deployment in remote regions with limited power access.
This authorization is valid for 10 years, subject to a five-year review, and supports India's ambitious goal of expanding nuclear capacity while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The development also strengthens India's pathway to achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2070, reinforcing its commitment to clean energy innovation and sustainable development.
