Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--India's oil-major Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) (BSE: 530965) (New Delhi) has received environmental clearance from the State Government of Assam for the expansion of its North Guwahati Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)-Bottling plant in the state. IOCL has planned to increase the capacity of the plant by 1,200 metric ton (MT) adding two LPG storage vessels of 600 MT each.
Indian Oil has planned expansion of its plants at North Guwahati, Bishalgarh, Sekmai, Silchar and Dimapur to cater to the growing demand of LPG in the North Eastern part of India. The company has awarded a combined turn-key contract to Fabtech Projects & Engineers Limited (Pune, Maharashtra) for the execution of these expansion projects. However, the construction work at four out of five locations could not commence due to pending environmental clearance.
Located at a distance of about 25 kilometers (km) from Guwahati city, the bottling plant was commissioned in the year 1994 with an initial production capacity of 88 thousand metric tons per annum (TMTPA). The plant has a storage capacity of 1,320 MT and supplies LPG in the Guwahati city and the adjoining districts of Assam.
In order to meet the requirement of LPG in the area, IOCL has proposed to augment the storage capacity of North Guwahati plant to enhance the total storage capacity to 2,520 MT and to ensure a supply for six to seven days. According to IOCL, the North Guwahati plant at its current capacity can cater to the demand in the region for only three days which is very low considering the hilly terrains in the area, poor road conditions and considerable distance from source locations.
Indian Oil is India's largest oil marketing company. The business segments of IOCL include refinery, pipelines, marketing, petrochemical, exploration and production of natural gas. Indian Oil controls 10 of India's 20 refineries and accounts for a 47% share in the petroleum products market along with its subsidiaries.
