Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Chicago Bridge & Iron Company N.V. (NYSE:CBI) (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) recently announced that its group company, Lummus Technology (Bloomfield, New Jersey), has been awarded contracts by India's Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) (Guwahati, Assam) for basic engineering and licensing of two new chemical plants.
BCPL is a joint-venture company promoted by four organizations. GAIL India Limited (BSE:532155) (New Delhi) holds an equity stake of 70%, and Oil India Limited (Duliajan, Assam), Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) (Guwahati, Assam), and the state government of Assam hold 10% stakes each. The $1.18 billion project is scheduled to be operational in 2012.
The petrochemical complex is being developed in Lepetkata in the Dibrugarh district of Assam. It will consist of a 220,000-ton-per-year ethylene plant and a 60,000-ton-per-year downstream polypropylene plant. Lummus Technology's proprietary ethylene technology will be used in the plant while the polypropylene plant will utilize technology provided by Lummus Novolen Technology GmbH (Mannheim, Germany).
Chicago Bridge & Iron acquired Lummus Global in November 2007. The new entity now offers its hydrocarbon processing customers a total solutions package that includes technology licensing and the related catalysts, engineering, procurement and construction services, front-end engineering and design services, commissioning, and aftermarket support services. Before the acquisition, Lummus and its joint-venture partners had more than 70 licensed processes and more than 1,500 current and pending patents.
The ethylene technology of Lummus has been successfully installed in more than 200 plants worldwide. The technology ensures short and trouble-free start-ups, long run lengths, high reliability, and high on-stream factors. The Short Residence Time pyrolysis furnace is the key component of the ethylene production process.
The Novolen gas-phase polypropylene technology, licensed by Lummus Novolen Technology, provides an environment-friendly, reliable and highly flexible process. The polypropylene produced by this process is known to meet the requirements of the most demanding applications.
