Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--PT PLN East Nusa Tenggara (PT PLN NTT), a regional unit of Indonesia's state utility PT PLN, plans to boost its renewable energy capacity to 198 megawatts (MW) by 2030. The initiative will emphasize geothermal development, particularly on the island of Flores, which is recognized as a key geothermal zone.
While renewables currently make up just 10% of Nusa Tenggara Timur's 470-MW power mix, PT PLN NTT aims to increase this through new geothermal projects: Ulumbu (20 MW), Sokoria (25 MW), Mataloko (20 MW), and Atadei (10 MW). Existing capacity includes 50 solar plants (19.2 MW), nine micro-hydro units (6.77 MW), and three geothermal plants (20.5 MW).
Challenges remain around permits, infrastructure and electrification in remote areas. PT PLN NTT targets broader collaboration and tech advancement to overcome these hurdles and accelerate the region's clean energy transition.
Industrial Info is tracking more than US$52 billion worth of geothermal projects across Indonesia, the bulk of which remain in the early development phases.
