Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Forty-three large-scale industrial projects are under construction in South Carolina, representing more than $25 billion in total investment value. Projects range from new nuclear power generation units to tire manufacturing expansions.

Construction began earlier this year for new nuclear power generation units at the Virgil C. Summer Power Station, which is owned by South Carolina Electric & Gas Company, a subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (NYSE:SCG) (Cayce, South Carolina), in Jenkinsville, South Carolina. The $15 billion project will require more than 3,000 skilled construction workers during peak construction over the next four years.

Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire LLC (Nashville, Tennessee) started construction earlier this year on a $900 million tire manufacturing plant in Graniteville, South Carolina. It's part of a $1.2 billion investment in Aiken County, at facilities owned by Bridgestone.

Bridgestone is not the only tire manufacturer expanding in South Carolina. Both Continental Tire North America Incorporated and Michelin Tire Corporation have projects under construction in the state totaling $550 million. Future expansions in South Carolina for these two companies could add $500 million to the investment.

Johnson Controls Incorporated (NYSE:JCI) (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) recently completed construction and is commissioning a $150 million grassroot automotive battery recycling center in Florence, South Carolina. The center includes a 132,000-ton-per-year secondary lead smelter. The company has scheduled a grand opening ceremony for September 2012.
