Invista Moves Swiftly for Expansion of AND and HMD Capacity in Texas

Released Monday, December 17, 2007

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). INVISTA Incorporated (Wichita, Kansas), a subsidiary of Koch Industries Incorporated will lead off the coming year with a series of projects expanding the capacity of adiponitrile (ADN) and hexamethyldiamine (HMD) by up to 100,000 metric tons per year between two Texas plants. The first expansion will take place at INVISTA’s Victoria, Texas site where Palmetto Management & Engineering (Wilmington, Delaware) is providing engineering and procurement support for the project and Zachry Construction Corporation (San Antonio, Texas) will provide construction needs. This project will conclude during a scheduled turnaround currently planned to take place in the fourth quarter 2008. Zachry will also provide support and services for planned turnaround.

The second HMD and ADN expansion will take place at INVISTA’s Orange, Texas plant. Similar in scope and size engineering and procurement for this expansion is being completed by Mustang Engineering LP (Houston, Texas) and Zachry is providing construction as the site’s onsite alliance contractor. Construction is planned to begin during the second quarter next year with a completion tentatively during a maintenance turnaround in August of 2008. These expansions play a key role in INVISTA’s plant to continue expanding its nylon 6,6 intermediates and polymer capabilities globally. A grassroot nylon 6,6 plant that will include the production of ADN and HMD is being planned and engineered for construction in Asia within the next couple of years.

INVISTA has been an aggressive growth oriented company for many years, even before being acquired by Koch in 2004. Industrial Info is currently tracking nearly $300 million in future capital and maintenance projects identified for INVISTA in the United States and Canada planned to begin construction in 2008 or 2009. These investments include a substantial expansion of their polyester intermediates plant in Wilmington, North Carolina in which Mustang is once again playing an engineering role.
