Iowa State Begins $51 Million Vet Medicine Renovation Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Iowa State University (ISU) (Ames, Iowa) commenced construction in late 2006 on Phase I of its veterinary teaching hospital and diagnostics lab renovation project. With a total investment value (TIV) of $51 million, the project is a substantial upgrade for the 30-year-old, 100,000 square-foot vet med facility.

The project includes both renovations and construction of new building space. The renovations will be on the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which specializes in the research of veterinary medicine and the diagnosis of animal diseases, and at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. A 55,000 square-foot building addition is also being added. The addition will include a new advanced imaging facility and offer improved bio-security and infectious disease isolation areas, while enabling ISU to further enhance the extensive clinical care and training operations for equine and large animals. The hospital will be named after W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd, who contributed a major portion of the private donations received for the project. Once the new addition is complete, Vet Med building space will be increased by 25%.

Vision Architecture, Incorporated (West Des Moines, Iowa) and ED2 International (San Francisco, California) performed architectural design and engineering for the project. The project’s construction manager, JE Dunn Construction (Independence, Missouri) is working with the general contractor Story Construction (Ames, Iowa), who will continue to release subcontractor bids over the next few months. The second phase of this project includes the renovations on the vacant small animal facility, which will enable the building to be expanded in the future. Completion on both phases is expected sometime in late 2009.

In addition, ISU is reviewing potential plans to construct a new biologics facility to focus on protein research. Several options for the project scope are being evaluated and schematic design is tentatively underway by an architectural firm selected by ISU. The time frame for construction is yet to be determined pending final decision on project and financial details.
