J P Kenny Wins FEED Contract for Ichthys LNG Project in Australia

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--J P Kenny (Aberdeen, Scotland), a subsidiary of Wood Group plc (LSE:WG) (Aberdeen), recently won a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the upcoming Ichthys liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Western Australia.

The Ichthys project is a joint venture between INPEX Browse Limited (Perth, Western Australia) and Total E&P Australia, the local subsidiary of Total S.A (NYSE:TOT) (Paris, France). The project comprises development of offshore facilities at the Ichthys field in Browse Basin, including a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit for treatment and storage of condensate, a semi-submersible central processing facility, umbilicals, risers and flowlines, an onshore processing unit in Darwin, and an 850- kilometer undersea pipeline to transport gas from the field to the onshore processing unit.

Under the FEED contract, J P Kenny will provide offshore FEED services for the pipeline and umbilicals, risers and flowlines. Aker Solutions ASA (OSL:AKSO) (Lysaker, Norway) will execute the FEED contract for the central processing facility and the FPSO hull.

MCS (Galway, Ireland), also a subsidiary of the Wood Group, will provide necessary expertise for the design of the dynamic riser system. J P Kenny's sibling companies, Ionik Consulting (Aberdeen) and Multiphase Solutions Incorporated (Houston, Texas) are also expected to make significant contributions towards the Ichthys project.

During the FEED phase of the project, the contracted engineering company is expected to define, design and evaluate the infrastructure in detail. The estimated effort for J P Kenny's execution of the FEED contract is about 200,000 man-hours.

The onshore FEED contract for an LNG plant at Blaydin Point in Darwin has been awarded to the JKC joint venture, comprising JGC Corporation (TYO:1963) (Tokyo, Japan), KBR Incorporated (NYSE:KBR) (Houston, Texas) and Chiyoda Corporation (TYO:6366) (Yokohama, Japan).

INPEX, a 76% stakeholder and operator of the Ichthys project, has been working with J P Kenny since 2007 on preliminary design concepts for the venture. Inpex Corporation (TYO:1605) (Tokyo), the parent company of INPEX Browse Limited, is a global player in oil and gas exploration, with 74 ventures to its credit. The corporation has a footprint in 26 nations and is among the top 50 multinational petroleum companies. It has been active in the Australian market for the past two decades, having executed a number of projects in the Australian and Timor Sea regions.

The Ichthys project is expected to have a peak production capacity of more than 8 million tons per year of LNG, 100,000 barrels per day of condensate, and 1.6 million tons per year of liquefied petroleum gas. The facility is slated to commence LNG shipments by 2015.
