Japan's Petroleum Refineries Shut Down in Wake of 8.9 Magnitude Earthquake

Researched by Industrial Info Resources East Asia (Kofu-shi, Japan)--Four of Japan's 29 operational petroleum refineries are confirmed shut down after a magnitude 8.9 earthquake hit of the coast of Japan last night. The epicenter of the quake was located about 231 miles northeast of Tokyo. The confirmed refinery shutdowns are in the northern part of Japan. The total refining capacity of Japan is 4.6 million barrels per day (BBL/d).
Cosmo Oil Company Limited (Tokyo) has shut down at least one of its five refineries in Japan, including the 220,000-BBL/d Chiba Refinery. A fire in the tank farm area of the refinery at Chiba is spreading.
JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation (Tokyo) has shut down operations at three refineries: the 145,000-BBL/d Sendai refinery, the 252,000-BBL/d Kashima refinery and the 270,000-BBL/d Negishi refinery.
There are currently no estimates of the extent of damage to the refineries or their restart timelines.
