Libya Awards E&C Contract 300-Megawatt, N/G-Fired Unit in Tripoli

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) (Tripoli, Libya) has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (E+P+C) contract for a 300-megawatt (MW) expansion at its existing Western Mountain Power Station located in Tripoli, Libya. This will increase the power generation site capacity to a total of 900 MW. The (E+P+C) contract was awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. (BHEL) (New Delhi, India). Construction of the expansion is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2008 with completion and commissioning scheduled for the second quarter of 2010.

The contract calls for the construction of two additional 150 MW Siemens (V94.2) natural gas fired combustion turbine generator sets in a simple-cycle configuration. The station will have the most advanced instrumentation and controls, mechanical and electrical equipment in today's power-generation market. The approximate cost of the contract is estimated at around $250 million dollars. The equipment for the units will be supplied from BHEL's manufacturing facilities that are at six different locations throughout India.
