Start-up ethanol venture Marquis Energy LLC (Hennepin, Illinois) is preparing to start construction on a new fuel ethanol plant in Hennepin, Illinois. The company is expecting to receive the final approval on the air quality permit within days and some soil testing, pre-construction grading and excavation is already underway.

Fagen, Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota) has been selected at the design-build contractor for the project and the firm is currently interviewing construction subcontractors to build the plant.

Plans call for the creation of a nameplate 110 million-gallon per year dry grind fuel ethanol plant utilizing 40 million bushels of locally grown corn annually. The plant will also produce distillers dried grains, a by-product of ethanol production. Phase II, scheduled to begin soon after the initial phase, will increase the plant’s capacity to 200 million gallons per year and convert the entire operation from natural gas energy supply to coal.

The plant is located on a site near the Illinois River and has accessible barge transportation to allow receiving coal and ethanol shipments.

Construction of phase I is expected to be complete by March of 2008 and Phase II is expected to be operational one year later. Construction costs to build the plant are approximately $140 million.
