Massive UCSF Mission Bay Research Campus Nears $500 Million in Construction Projects

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). In January of this year, the first wave of university researchers began taking occupancy in the $160 million Genentech Hall research building and with that milestone the flagship building of the new UCSF Mission Bay Campus was open for business. When fully occupied in July, the six-story Genentech Hall will house over 900 people from a multitude of disciplines, including Structural and Chemical Biology and Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology, as well as the Molecular Design Institute and the Center for Advanced Technology.

Upon completion, the 43-acre UCSF Mission Bay campus will have 20 buildings and contain over 2 million gross square feet of research, instruction, academic, and administration space. Following the proposed 10-15 year development timeline, UCSF will have doubled their amount of research space and have estimated that over 9,000 scientists, researchers, graduates and administrators will be located at their Mission Bay facilities.

Other research-oriented projects currently under development or construction at the Mission Bay campus include:

Genetics and Developmental Sciences Building: Currently under construction, the 165,000 square foot research facility is scheduled for completion in mid to late 2003. Its research focus will be on Genetics, Development and Behavioral Sciences. Project construction cost is $62.3 million

The Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3): The headquarters of the Institute, which is being developed in partnership with UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz, broke ground in fall 2002. Occupancy is targeted for late 2004. Project construction cost is $100 million.

Cancer Research Building: Pending approval by UC Regents, this five-story building would contain research and development programs in neurological surgery, urology and cancer research. The current schedule calls for completion in 2006. Proposed project construction cost is $100 million.

Some of the many companies involved with various portions of the project include:

Architects - Cesar Pelli and Associates (New Haven, Connecticut), SmithGroup (San Francisco, California), Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership (Portland, Oregon)

Structural Engineers - Rutherford & Chekene (San Francisco, California)

Construction Contractors - The Clark Construction Group (Bethesda, Maryland), Gilbane (Providence, Rhode Island)

The UCSF Mission Bay Research Campus forms the nucleus of the larger Mission Bay project, which is San Francisco's largest urban development since the building of Golden Gate Park. Adjacent to UCSF's research campus is Mission Bay's Life Sciences Campus, designed to allow commercial life science companies to have close proximity to a top research university. The Mission Bay development covers 303 acres of land between San Francisco Bay and Interstate 280. Catellus Development Corporation (San Francisco, California) is the developer of the overall Mission Bay redevelopment project in cooperation with the city of San Francisco.
