MBTA Planning $669 Million Commuter Rail Extension in Massachusetts

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) (Boston, Massachusetts) is in the planning stage and seeking a design-build firm for the proposed $669 million New Bedford & Fall River commuter rail extension project in Massachusetts.

The project will involve the construction of 22.3 miles of new rail line, the refurbishment & upgrade of 47.6 miles of existing rail line, the construction of eight new commuter rail stations, and the renovation of two existing commuter rail stations. When it is complete, the line will extend commuter rail service from the South Station to New Bedfordand Fall River, Massachusetts.

MBTA should be ready to select a design-build firm to complete design and engineering, as well as oversee the construction, in the late summer of 2006, selection of a general contractor following in the winter of 2006. Actual construction should begin in early 2007, with the new line extension coming on-line in late 2009. When completed, the new extension will provide sixteen commuter rail round trips, with eight to New Bedford and eight to Fall River.

MBTA serves 175 cities and towns in the state of Massachusetts. Tracing its routes back to the 1600’s, MBTA celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the nation’s first subway, the Green Line, in 1997. MBTA offers 181 routes and 252 (not including 9,000 bus stops) stations along its rail, trackless trolley, trolley and water ferry system. MBTA also maintains over 400 miles of commuter rail line on the North and South sides of the state. MBTA currently employs over 6,500 people.
