Medical College of Georgia Sinks Teeth into Construction of $128 Million School of Dentistry Building

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is biting back against the state's current shortage of dentists with the construction of a $128 million building for the School of Dentistry. The school recently hosted Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr., and Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver for the formal groundbreaking ceremony of the facility, which will replace the existing building, which opened in 1970.

The project will elevate the MCG School of Dentistry to being one of the nation's largest sources of dentists. The five-story, 270,000-square-foot facility will allow MCG to increase the current class size of 63 to 100 by 2016, while increasing residency positions from 44 to 72. If the current trend continues--roughly 85% of graduates remain in Georgia to practice--the increased student count will address the statewide need for more dentists. The nationwide ratio is 54.2 per 100,000 citizens; presently, Georgia is operating with 41.1.

Designed by Atlanta's Lord Aeck and Sargent, in partnership with Francis Cauffman Architects (New York, New York), the building will house the dental school's nine specialty clinics, two large student clinics, simulation labs, the School of Allied Health Sciences' dental hygiene program, an administration area, an expanded faculty practice, and a new Center for Esthetic and Implant Dentistry.

The BE&K Building Group (Atlanta, Georgia) is serving as construction manager for the building, according to Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical-Biotech Tracker - Online Database. MCG is expecting to finish construction in 2011 and open the building to students in early 2012.
