Mexico's Jose Lopez Portillo Thermal Plant Performs 300-MW Combustion Turbine Maintenance

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Jose Lopez Portillo Carbon I Thermal Plant, which is owned and operated by Compania Federal de Electricidad (CFE) (Mexico City, Mexico), will perform major maintenance on the plant's 300-megawatt (MW) steam turbine. The unit will be brought offline next August 31st for 60 days. According to plant officials, major work will be performed on the turbine, generator and auxiliary parts, including pulverisers, pre-heaters and precipitators.

A major maintenance outage was performed on Unit 1 in February of this year, and units 3 and 4 will be taken offline in January and March 2010, respectively.

The Jose Lopez Portillo Carbon I is equipped with four 300-MW coal-fired steam turbines totaling 1,200 MW. The plant is located in the northeast district of Coahuila. The condensing turbines were manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011) (MHI) (Tokyo), and the boilers were supplied by Babcock-Hitachi (Tokyo, Japan) in 1982.

Jose Lopez Portillo Carbon I is connected to the national grid by two 230-kilovolt (kV) and two 400-kV transmission lines oriented to the Coyote stream in Nuevo Laredo Tamaulipas. The Jose Lopez Portillo Carbon II thermal plant has a total output of 1,400 MW.

CFE provides electricity for 25.8 million customers throughout Mexico. The state-owned company has 177 power plants of various types, including thermal, nuclear, hydroelectric, and alternative energy facilities, with a total of nearly 50,000 MW of power capacity. It also purchases power from independent producers and supplies wholesale power to Mexico City's distributor, Luz y Fuerza del Centro.
