Mid-January Targeted for Kickoff of North Carolina's First Ethanol Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held ethanol startup Clean Burn Fuels LLC (Raleigh, North Carolina) is shooting for January 15 as the first-grind date for the company's new fuel ethanol plant, located just southeast of Raeford, North Carolina.

Touted as North Carolina's first ethanol plant, the facility will import more than 20 million bushels of corn annually by rail, producing a nameplate 60 million gallons per year of fuel ethanol. However, the company expects to push the plant to produce 78 million gallons per year.

Clean Burn expects to start taking in corn in about 45 days and has onsite storage for 1.5 million bushels. The plant utilizes KATZEN International Incorporated (Cincinnati, Ohio) licensed ethanol process technology. Clean Burn acted as its own general contractor, coordinating subcontractors and procuring equipment. Some engineering work and process piping installation was handled by Diversified Piping Systems LLC (Greer, South Carolina).

Construction of the estimated $100 million plant started in late 2007. Two years have passed for Clean Burn to get to this point.

The plant is located roughly five miles southeast of Raeford, in the tiny town of Dundarrach, North Carolina. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to create 100 jobs for the rural community.

Located in the heart of North Carolina's hog, turkey and chicken belt, Clean Burn expects to take full advantage of the potential market for the plant's distillers dried grains (DDG) byproduct, which is used as feed additive. The DDG will be marketed by Perdue Agri Business (Salisbury, Maryland).
