MidAmerican Energy Plans Scrubber Projects for Iowa's George Neal North and South Plants

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--MidAmerican Energy Company (Des Moines, Iowa) is conducting preliminary design work on a flue gas desulfurization scrubber project at its George Neal North and George Neal South power stations in Sioux City, Iowa.

The 1,047-megawatt (MW) coal-fired George Neal North plant consists of three General Electric (NYSE:GE) tandem compound steam turbine-generators, a Babcock & Wilcox wet bottom cyclone-fired boiler and two Foster Wheeler (NASDAQ:FWLT) opposed/front-fired dry bottom boilers. The plant became operational in 1964.

The George Neal South plant includes a single coal-fired unit, a Foster Wheeler opposed-fired dry bottom boiler and a General Electric steam turbine generator. The unit came online in 1979.

Dry scrubbers will only be installed on the 550-MW Unit 3 at the North plant and the 640-megawatt Unit 4 at the South plant. The smaller units will be considered for scrubbers at a later time.

MidAmerican will open bidding for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm later this year.

Construction is scheduled to kick off in the spring of 2012. Completion of Unit 4 is scheduled for the fall of 2013, and completion of Unit 3 is set for the spring of 2014.
