Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Although many new construction dollars are going overseas, U.S. businesses are still experiencing an incredible boom. Agricultural-herbicide products containing glyphosate like Roundup, the leading seller in its class, are in great demand largely because of the ethanol business and rising corn prices. With the price of crude oil near $120 per barrel and corn prices on the rise because of high demand in the ethanol industry, efficient land usage is critical to farmers who wish to maximize the profitability of their farms. The competition between weeds and cash crops requires herbicides to aid in producing maximum yields in favor of the farmer. Additional production capacity of glyphosate-based chemicals will be needed to meet demand over the next several years.

Up to $196 million will be spent by Monsanto Company (NYSE:MON) (Saint Louis, Missouri) at its plant located in Luling, Louisiana, over the next 18 months to increase production capacity and develop plant infrastructure for the expansion of glyphosate chemicals. Industrial Info is tracking six active projects relating to this major expansion as part of its North American Project Database. These projects represent a substantial investment in production processes that will help position Monsanto to provide increased amounts of glyphosate for products like Roundup. Since the recent resurgence in demand for glyphosate that was fueled by increased acreage dedicated to corn and other crops used in the production of biofuel, as well as greater attention to production maximization, more plant capacity is needed to produce glyphosate and closely related products.
