Morocco's OCP Plans $6.3 Billion in Capital Chemical Projects

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Morocco's state-owned Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP), a major phosphoric acid manufacturer and fertilizer producer, is dominating the African fertilizer market. Industrial Info is tracking US$6.3 billion worth of capital-spending chemical projects attributed to OCP in Africa.

In 2016, OCP launched its OCP Africa division, which has subsidiaries in 12 African countries, including Nigeria and Ethiopia.

The group is developing two fertilizer-blending plants, in Ogun and Sokoto states, with a total capacity of around 355,000 tons per year. There has been high demand for fertilizers in Africa due to the growing population.

Other OCP projects are under construction, including those located in Safi, Jorf Lasfar and Cote d'Ivoire. Completion of these projects is expected by the end of 2023 or the first quarter of 2024.

There are many global and local players in the African fertilizers market. Notore Chemical Industries (Nigeria), Omnia Holdings Limited (South Africa) and Yara International ASA (Oslo, Norway) are some of the major producers who have their operations in the region. Such companies are constructing new fertilizer manufacturing plants to boost domestic production.
