Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). New England Biolabs (N.E.B.) (Beverly, Massachusetts) has chosen the 126-acre Proctor Estate in Ipswich, Massachusetts as the site for construction of their new laboratory and production facility. The company is also renovating a Victorian family home located on the property, which is approximately 50 miles north of Boston to serve as their new corporate headquarters and administrative offices. N.E.B. produces restriction endonucleases and other related products used for molecular biology research.
The challenge in selecting the site was how to gracefully blend today's state-of-the-art technology while maintaining the historical integrity of the location. Over two years ago, N.E.B. launched a worldwide competition for design of the $50 million project. Weston/Williamson Associates (London, England) were selected as the winners in January of 2002, from a field of 320 entries.
Currently under construction, the new 150,000 square foot facility will be linked to the 30,000 square foot mansion by a sky lit underground tunnel. Expected to be complete in late 2004, the Chiofaro Company of Boston is serving as the project's developers and John Moriarty Associates (Winchester, Massachusetts) is handling construction management.
