Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The New York Times Company (NYSE:NYT) (New York, New York) recently moved into new headquarters in a skyscraper located a block from Times Square in downtown Manhattan. The building was designed by architect Renzo Piano Building Workshop (Genova, Italy). As featured on Electric TV, the 52-story, 1.6 million-square-foot building features an energy-saving Total Light Management System, in which the NECA-IBEW team played a large role installing.
Designed to maximize natural light, the Total Light Management System includes numerous sustainable design elements, such as a dimmable lighting system and a dynamic shading system. According to Glenn Hughes, Director of Construction during the project, "Total Light Management is the single greatest opportunity for energy savings for new or retrofit buildings." Since opening in November 2007, the project has resulted in a saving of 70% on lighting costs for the New York Times.
The NECA-IBEW team was integral in bringing the massive job to completion on time and under budget. According to Bert Rahm of Turner Construction, "When comparing union and non-union contracts, there is really no comparison. Union contractors are, by far, better trained, more responsible for safety, and they have a concern for a quality product."
