North American Ethanol Plant Construction Update

The following is an advisory by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). As recent news of MTBE ban delays continue to ripple throughout the ethanol industry, new plant construction and development is continuing to proceed.

According to Jay Brunson, Synfuels Manager with Industrialinfo.com, In the first quarter of the year, three additional ethanol plants became operational in Iowa and South Dakota that will bring an additional 46 million gallons per year to the table this year and some 418 million gallons per year of capacity is currently under construction and scheduled to come on-line by mid 2003.

Fifteen ethanol plants are at present under construction and four more are scheduled to begin site work this month.

Five plants in Iowa totaling 155 million gallons per year are underway, including Little Sioux Corn Processors, Midwest Grain Processors, Northeast Iowa Grain Processors, Pine Lake Corn Processors, and Tall Corn Ethanol.

Wisconsin has three plants under construction totaling 60 million gallons per year. These are Ace Ethanol, Badger State Ethanol, and Plover Ethanol.

Two ethanol plants in Illinois and three in South Dakota for a projected total of 129 million gallons per year are also underway. Illinois has Adkins Energy and Southern Illinois University's Pilot Plant, while South Dakota is represented by Glacial Lakes Energy, Northern Lights, and Great Plains Ethanol.

Wrapping up the list is Michigan Ethanol's 40 million gallon per year plant in Caro and Husker Ag Processing's 20 million gallon per year plant in Plainview, Nebraska.

Plants projected to begin construction this month are Pine Lake Corn Processors, Dakota Value Capture, Algoma Ethanol, and United Grain.
