Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A look back at the second quarter of 2016 reveals the Pharmaceutical-Biotech industry wrapped up construction on a total of 101 North American capital and MRO (maintenance) projects. A recent survey of reported projects in Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical-Biotech Online Database reveals that the projects represent a total investment value (TIV) of $3.9 billion.
Sources for the second-quarter activity include private industry, commercial developers and universities. The projects reported include grassroot facilities, major building additions to existing sites and in-plant capital. The projects are a varied group in both size and focus. The project average TIV is $38 million.
Kite Pharma (NASDAQ:KITE) (Santa Monica, California) invested $18 million to add a T-Cell Oncology Therapies plant in El Segundo, California. With project team EwingCole (Irvine, California) and KPRS Construction (Brea, California), the company renovated and equipped a 43,500-square-foot leased building for the commercial production of engineered autologous cell therapies (including eACT, KTE-C19, a CAR-T candidate that has shown significant promise in B cell lymphomas and leukemias) and other related T-cell based immunotherapies to treat cancer.
In Davie, Florida, contract manufacturer (CMO) PharmaTech LLC (Davie) invested $10 million to expand production capacity. The project equipped an existing 50,000-square-foot building within the New Town Commerce Center, allowing the CMO to offer additional solids, liquid and nanotechnology formulation and manufacturing capabilities. Jazayri Construction, Incorporated (Hallandale, Florida) served as the general contractor on the project.
The University of Nebraska Medical center invested $35 million to construct an 85,000-square-foot building for the College of Pharmacy. The new building will house laboratory, research and educational space to support drug discovery and development, drug delivery and clinical/translational research. Project team members included RDG Planning and Design (Omaha, Nebraska) and Hausmann Construction (Lincoln, Nebraska).
