Nova Scotia Power to Demolish 96 MW Glace Bay Station

The following is an advisory by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Nova Scotia Power (Halifax, Nova Scotia) is preparing to demolish the five units at Glace Bay Power Station. The station's first unit began operations in 1951 and the last unit started commercial operations in 1967. The station was mothballed in 1994 and it's capacity was replaced when the 185 mega-watt (MW) Point Aconi Thermal Generating Station began commercial operations. The Point Aconi Station utilizes coal-fired fluidized bed technology. The Glace Bay Station has Foster Wheeler and Babcock & Wilcox boilers, which power four 15 MW Parsons steam turbine/generators and one 36 MW Siemens unit. Nova Scotia Power plans to start dismantling the plant in May of 2002 and will salvage and sell used equipment. The units are no longer economical for Nova Scotia Power to operate due to high operating costs and excessive capital expenditures that would be required to restart the units and comply with environmental mandates.

Nova Scotia Power is the primary operating subsidiary of Emera Incorporated (TSE: EMA), a diversified energy company, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. With 550,000 customers and $3.4 billion in assets, Emera's strategy is to pursue energy opportunities throughout northeastern North America.
