NRG Energy to Mothball Units in Delaware

Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Indian River Power LLC, a subsidiary of NRG Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey), has plans to mothball two of their smaller units at the Indian River Generating Station starting next year. Officials have stated that Unit 2, an 82-megawatt (MW) coal-fired generator, will be mothballed around May 2010, and Unit 1, also an 82-MW coal-fired unit, is scheduled to be mothballed in the spring of 2011. Current plans are to mothball the two units indefinitely while units 3 and 4 will stay operational.

The Indian River Generating Station is an 801-MW plant located in Millsboro, Delaware. The station consists of two 82-MW Siemens Westinghouse steam turbines, one 177-MW General Electric (NYSE:GE) steam turbine, one 442-MW Allis-Chalmers (NYSE:ALY) steam turbine, and one 19-MW combustion turbine. Each coal unit is equipped with a dry bottom boiler. The station provides enough electricity to power the city of Millsboro.
