Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station, located in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, is being heated with non-nuclear power for testing of its pressurized steam pipes for leaks after an outage that dates back to April 2011. Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station is owned by Omaha Public Power District.
The station, which sits across from Iowa on the Missouri River, initially shut down in April 2011 for routine maintenance. But significant flooding, a small fire and a series of safety violations forced it to remain closed.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) spokeswoman Lara Uselding said Fort Calhoun has resolved about 70% of the items that must be dealt with before it can restart. But the remaining concerns include determining whether the structural supports inside the building that houses the reactor are strong enough to withstand extreme circumstances.
Plant officials informed Industrial Info that they are hoping to return the station online during the first week of December 2013.
Fort Calhoun has one generating unit that began operations in 1973 and a total generating capacity of 482 megawatts when at full load.
