Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Darlington Nuclear Power Station, located in Bowmanville, Ontario, near Toronto, experienced a forced outage on Unit 4 Thursday morning. State-government-owned Ontario Power Generation (Toronto) owns and operates the station.
The 881-megawatt (MW) unit was taken offline after maintenance personnel discovered a water leak. Plant personnel determined that the leak was on the secondary side of the plant, and repairs will be limited to the non-nuclear side of the unit.
The estimation of repairs remains at one week, and plant personnel hope to have the unit back in service early next week.
The station is planning a vacuum building outage (VBO), which is unique to Canada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactors. The upcoming maintenance is scheduled for this spring and will begin in April. The entire facility will be offline approximately one month.
The Darlington Nuclear Power Station has a total capacity of 3,524 MW, with four units each producing 881 MW.
