Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Planned capital project expenditures where extruders are included in the scope of work are forecast to top $2.5 billion from 232 projects during the coming two years. These projects have been identified in two of the thirteen North American industrial markets monitored by Industrial Info including the chemical processing industry (CPI) and industrial manufacturing. Extruders play a key role in both industries, but generally represent two very different types of extruder applications. In the CPI, extruders are commonly used to compound plastic resins to produce custom grades of material that can in turn be used to mold, extrude or produce a wide variety of plastic or polymer products. In the industrial manufacturing industry, extruders are most commonly associated with the production of films, tubing and plastic products.
A large number of the planned projects are scheduled to begin construction this summer, but some of the larger projects are planned to begin construction in the spring or summer of 2007. Toyo Automotive Parts USA Incorporated (Franklin, Kentucky) is planning a second phase expansion of its new plant site located in White, Georgia, that could require an investment in excess of $120 million.
Similarly in the CPI, short-term project opportunities are significant with the start of construction for at least twelve projects by the end of 2006 although the largest projects are not expected to be in the field until early next year. Total Petrochemicals USA Incorporated (Houston, Texas) is evaluating the addition of a new polypropylene (PP) line addition at its Deer Park, Texas plant site to produce an estimated 300,000 metric tons per year of PP for the merchant market.
The geography of where these 232 projects will be located varies slightly by industry. In the CPI, a majority of the planned projects are forecast to take place in the Southeast, Southwest and Great Lakes market regions, representing 20 of the 26 projects identified. These same regions are also significant for the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, totaling nearly 43% of the planned project activity, although the Mid Atlantic and Northeast market regions also represent a significant level of activity with 54 projects. The Southeast and Southwest easily top the list as the market regions with the most significant level of spending equaling a combined $1.2 billion of the total spending identified in this analysis.
