Plymouth Energy Breaks Ground on Fuel Ethanol Plant in Iowa

Plymouth Energy Company (Merrill, Iowa), an investor owned ethanol venture, held a groundbreaking ceremony last week to kick-off preliminary construction activity on a new 50 million gallon per year fuel ethanol plant that will be located in Merrill, Iowa.

Plans call for the creation of a nameplate 50 million gallon per year fuel ethanol plant that will convert some 18 million bushels per year of corn into the renewable fuel and also produce 150,000 tons of distiller’s dried grains annually. Construction costs to build the plant are in the $70 million range.

The plant is being designed and built by Agra Industries (Merrill, Wisconsin) and site work is expected to be complete within the next two months, with the goal of getting the foundations set for tankage and buildings before winter weather arrives.

Construction is expected to take sixteen months to complete and the plant is scheduled to be operational by February 2008, and once the plant becomes operational, some 40 new jobs will be created.

The project also marks the eighth ethanol plant currently under construction in Iowa. The other seven are Absolute Energy (Saint Ansgar); Freedom Fuels (Mason City); Green Plains Renewable Energy (Shenandoah); Pinnacle Ethanol (Corning); US Bio Albert City (Albert City); VeraSun Energy (Fort Dodge) and Tate & Lyle (Fort Dodge).
