Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India recorded a cumulative growth of 5.56% in power generation in the financial year 2010-11. As compared to the actual generation of 768.42 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) registered in 2009-10, about 811.14 billion kWh of electricity were generated during the financial year that ended March 31, 2011.
According to Central Electricity Authority (CEA), which is India's government-controlled power sector repository, thermal power generation saw a growth rate of 3.81% against the corresponding figure for the 2009-10 fiscal year. Generation from hydro-based plants recorded a modest growth rate of about 10.01%.
Meanwhile, nuclear generation in India achieved a remarkable growth of 41.04%, mainly due to the improved availability of nuclear fuel to various nuclear plants.
Despite the growth, the actual generation fell slightly short of the power generation target of 830.8 billion kWh that was set for the year. Energy generation during 2010-11 was 811.1 billion kWh, which is 97.5% of the target.
The Ministry of Power (MoP) has set a capacity addition target of 7,675 MW for the ongoing financial year 2011-12, while the target for power generation stands at 835 billion kWh. Power projects with capacities of 1,392 MW, 2,919 MW and 3,364 MW are expected to be realized by the central, state and private-sector power generation companies, respectively.
The country achieved a capacity addition of 12,160 MW during the financial year 2010-11, as compared to the target of 20,359 MW, or a 60% achievement.
