Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Electronuclear’s Angra I nuclear power plant tripped offline early morning September 20, 2007, after its electric-generator protection system was alerted. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, according to a company news release. The unit has remained offline, and Electronuclear has not yet set a resume date.

The 657-megawatt (MW) plant has been operating with a pressurized water reactor (PWR) since 1985. The plant is located on Itaorna Beach in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Electronuclear plans to invest $209 million at Angra I to replace two 300 MW steam generators. The new equipment capacity will extend Angra I's service life. In order to accomplish this work, the station will go offline in June 2008 for 120 days; 90 days for the equipment replacement and the remaining time for maintenance. The project is estimated to be completed by September 2008, and Westinghouse will develop it.
